Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak)성산일출봉

A UNESCO World Heritage tuff cone rising sheer from the sea, crowned by a grassy crater. In When Life Gives You Tangerines it towers over one of the story's most devastating acts of devotion.

When Life Gives You Tangerines

The UNESCO sunrise peak beneath which one of the drama's most wrenching scenes — the 3,000 bows — takes place.

Recreate the shot: The drama's Jeju is dawn light on the tuff cone from the west approach — arrive for sunrise (the name literally means Sunrise Peak), shoot from the coastal path with canola fields in the foreground in spring.

There now: The summit climb is ~50 minutes round trip on maintained stairs, busiest 10:00–15:00 with tour buses. Sunrise slots are surprisingly uncrowded outside holidays; haenyeo divers perform below the cliffs at set times.

Editor's tips

  • Sunrise entry queues form early — arrive 40+ minutes before first light.
  • The haenyeo divers' show at the base cove (weather permitting) is an under-visited gem.
